The Kindle DX is the original and now discontinued version of the newer International Kindle DX. Many readers appreciate the devices large size screen, which makes reading for extended periods of time easier on the eyes.

PROS

The Kindle DX features easy navigation and 1 step, out-of-the-box set up. It has a built-in wireless data network that is completely free to use, by way of hundreds of nationwide hot spots. This model has a built-in keyboard, which makes is easy to look up favorite books and authors and take notes, as well.

CONS

The negative aspects of the Kindle DX are as follows. The device is quite heavy, as noted below. There is no expansion slot for adding extra memory. The rechargeable battery is sealed in the case and cannot be removed. In the event it dies, the entire ebook reader must be sent back to Amazon for a fee-based battery replacement. Although a carrying case is available, it is a separate purchase requirement.

Design

The Kindle DX features a large diagonal screen that measures 9.7 inches, which represents a major difference when compared to other ereaders. It weighs 17.6 ounces, which is heavier than many of its counterparts. However, most readers don’t mind since it still weighs less than most hard back books. This Kindle goes from portrait to landscape simply by turning it around.

Content

This e-book reader has enough memory to store up to 3,500 books, which can be purchased and ready to read and less than 60 seconds. In the unlikely event that a user runs out of storage space, they have the option of deleting any book and then re-downloading it at a later date, at no additional charge.

The official Kindle store features more than 700,000 books, newspapers, magazines and blog choices. Some books can even be downloaded free of charge.

At its inception, the Kindle DX was billed as an excellent textbook ereader. Although the screen displays 16 shades of gray as opposed to full color, this model does a good job of displaying charts and graphics. It also features the ability to highlight sentences within the text and comes with a searchable dictionary.

Memory/Battery Life

The Kindle DX has a 4 GB memory. However, only 3 GB’s can be utilized. The battery typically lasts two weeks, when the wireless Internet future is frequently used. It lasts longer when the Internet future is turned off.

Additional Features

Additional features include adjustable font size, the capability to display image files, a basic web browser and an e-Ink display that is so clear and easy to read…many users feel they are actually reading text off of a sheet of paper as opposed to an ereader screen. This particular Kindle also plays AAC audio and MP3′s.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Kindle DX is quite easy to use, has a large screen display that helps to eliminate eye strain and features free wireless Internet access. Even though it is heavier than many other ebook readers, users appreciate the functionality that this device has to offer along with the excellent support, both customer service and technical related, that Amazon provides.
