The Barnes & Noble Nook Color, recipient of the CNET Editors Choice award, features many popular extras and is often referred to as “the reader’s tablet.” Because of its excellent display quality, many satisfied book lovers find this to be the best LCD ebook reader available today.

Nook extras include chess, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Pandora Internet radio that allows users to listen to music while they read and Quickoffice software, which among other things allows users to view Microsoft Office files, including Excel and PowerPoint.

The Nook Color, featuring android operating system, is the perfect choice for those who love to read magazines and books with lots of colorful images. Readers can switch from portrait to landscape view, simply by turning the device. Free Wi-Fi is readily available in all Barnes & Noble stores.

It also comes equipped with the exclusive LendMe application, which allows readers to borrow books that friends have purchased, with the touch of a button…a great way to read bestsellers and save money doing it!

CONS

This device typically has an 8 hour battery life, which is much shorter than that of several other ereader brands. The battery itself must be replaced by the factory. The only android apps available are those that come pre-installed on the Nook. Unfortunately, it is not 3G compatible.

Design

The e-book reader weighs approximately 16 ounces and is .5 inches thick. It has a 7 inch touch screen that is capable of displaying more than 16 million colors and reduces glare for easier reading in bright sunlight.

It features a built-in mono speaker and universal serial headphone jack, giving readers the option to listen to audio books. The media player allows readers to watch MP 4 format videos.

Content

There are more than 2 million books, magazines, and newspapers available for download at the Barnes & Noble ebookstore. This device is geared toward family members of all ages and does a wonderful job of displaying colorful children’s books. In fact, there are hundreds of picture book and thousands of chapter book titles to choose from.

Since the device supports EPUB files, users can download thousands of free public domain books from Google Books and other popular sources.

Memory/Battery Life

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color has an 8 GB internal memory, which has the capacity to hold approximately 6,000 books…making this initial storage space much larger than most of its competitors. Users have the option of purchasing an (up to 32 GB) microSD card, when additional storage space is needed.

The battery typically takes three hours to fully recharge and last for up to eight hours when the wireless feature is turned off.

Additional Features

Additional features include personalized reading and shopping experiences, a bookmark feature, e-mail capabilities, adjustable font sizes and a variety of colorful wallpapers.

In conclusion, the Barnes & Noble Nook Color is packed with features, which make reading and surfing the Internet a more enjoyable experience. Although it doesn’t utilize E-Ink technology it still manages to produce excellent display qualities and remains a top seller on the market, today.
