Pandigital, known for quality production of digital photo frames, introduces their first ereader…the Pandigital Novel. It features a LCD full-color touch screen and is available in both U.S. and Canadian models. As of this writing, they offer readers 3 different purchase choices, including a less expensive black and white model.

PROS

This e-book reader runs on the android operating system and is compatible with several other systems including Windows 2000, Vista and MAC. It is Wi-Fi compatible and features a digital photo playback function, which transforms the device into a digital photo frame when not in use. (Internet connection and wireless network is required, for Wi-Fi use.)

CONS

Many readers find the Pandigital Novel to be sluggish and are somewhat disappointed with the device’s short battery life and touch screen that can be difficult to use, at times. Like most ereaders, this one is typically difficult to use in bright sunlight. Page turning speed is said to be slower than other ereader brands.

Although, it utilizes the Android operating system, the only apps that can currently be used are those which have been pre-loaded by Pandigital.

Design

The e-book reader weighs approximately 12 ounces and is .5 inches thick. It is available with either a 7 inch or 9 inch screen. This ereader comes in the choice of white and black.

Content

The Pandigital Novel utilizes Barnes & Noble’s ebook store catalog, which features more than 2 million books, magazines and newspapers available in more than 50 categories…some of them are even free. Because the device supports EPUB files countless free domain books, including half a million no cost classics, can be downloaded from sources such as Google books and Gutenberg.org.

The reader also supports PDF and HTML formats as well as a JPEG, PNG, GIF image and MP3, WAV and AAC audio files.

Memory/Battery Life

This E-book reader is equipped with 1 GB of internal memory. Users have the option of expanding the memory to 32 GB with the use of a microSD card, which must be purchased separately. Using a card vastly increases the storage space and allows readers to download thousands and thousands of their favorite books and magazines.

Average battery life in the reading mode is only six hours or 6,000 page turns, which is a far cry from other ereaders that last up to two weeks or 8,000 to 10,000 page turns(in the same mode) without the need to be recharged. Unfortunately, the rechargeable battery is not removable.

Additional Features

Additional features include calendar, alarm clock and adjustable font size. It also includes a web browser, e-mail access, built-in dictionary, music player, multiple bookmarks, text highlighting capabilities and a word search function.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this e-book reader has promise. Besides reading, it allows users to watch videos, listen to music and even play games. The study-related added features and the fact that it is quite affordable make it a great tool for students. Taking into account that this is Pandigital’s first attempt at creating an ereader, it has made an overall good impression on those who have used it.
